Photographing L.A. Bike Culture

Photographing LA Bike Culture

As a fundraising event for the upcoming AIDS LifeCycle ride, our team is having a gallery show hosted by the Bike Oven, to coincide with North East L.A.'s second Saturday art openings. Will feature work by the more photographically inclined in our team, my self included. Prints, food and drink will be available for sale and all proceeds to benefit AIDS LifeCycle. More details to be announced.

Acres of Books is falling down.

Acres of Books

Sad news I read on LAist recently. Acres of Books, one of the great book meccas of Los Angeles, is going to be lost amongst redevelopment of Long Beach. It will be replaced by a mix use complex of housing, store fronts, and art spaces. Knowing the way things go, rather than an enrichment of the community, this will likely mean bland apartments, a starbucks, and a tourist gallery of idealized beach paintings and dolphins.

If you love books and haven't been, make sure you take advantage of what Acres of Books has to offer before it's too late. I just happened to be there recently with my camera before I heard the news and snapped some pics. I'll be visiting again soon, both to buy some books, and document it's glory before the fall.

New Aquarium Photos

Blue Cavern

I've added new photos to my Aquarium of the Pacific Flickr set from my most recent visit. I was really happy to have the opportunity to photograph the jellies. For a while the aquarium had gone from an abundance of jelly exhibits, to only one. Now they are back in action, bulbing and floating with their 95% water bodies.

Aquarium of the Pacific

If you've never been to visit the aquarium in downtown Long Beach, I highly recommend you check it out if you have the opportunity. It's a great facility with numerous species, and as an organization they play an active roll in preserving our coastal eco-systems.

Fastrip

Once my cycling blog got launched, it's cut into the post frequency here. In the interest of injecting some life back into the blog, I'm going to start selecting photos from my archive to highlight periodically.

Starting things off is this gas station photo in the middle of nowhere California on the way home from a snowboarding trip to Mammoth.

Draw Party

Some friends of mine, all Otis alumni, got together for some mexican food and drawing stuff. You can check out what other perversions of pensmenship were spawned that evening at my friend Samantha's blog.

The comic above was created by each of us taking a turn to draw the panel after the previous person. I had the honor of drawing the last frame, our epic conclusion. See if you can guess which other frames are mine.

Life is like a giant donut...

My blog has gone into a state of stagnancy as of late, and there are a few reasons. One is being busy with work, and also having a more active life then I've ever had, physically (biking) and socially (yes, I interact with people). The other reason is for a while now, I've been a little conflicted about the direction of the blog, which started out as an outlet for my art & photography and some of what I was up to. Pretty soon what I was up to was lots of biking, and the blog became more about biking then anything else.

In short, sometime soon I may split apart my blog into two. One for all of my biking adventures, and one for my photography & art.

In the meantime while I figure out how I want to do this, enjoy this giant donut, courtesy of my old hood, the City of La Puente.
